MMAs most polarizing fighters.

This Saturday night bring us the finale of season 14 of The Ultimate Fighter headlined by a fight between the coaches Michael Bisping and Jason “Mayhem” Miller. Initially the UFC wanted Chael Sonnen to coach opposite Bisping but because of a suspension and licensing issues in Las Vegas he was unable to do so, which is unfortunate as although Miller has been a suitable replacement the build to a Sonnen and Bisping fight could have been one of the sports best. Why is that you may ask, both Sonnen and Bisping are two of mixed martial arts most outspoken fighters and garner a mixture of applause and animosity for such. This got me to thinking, who are MMAs most polarizing fighters, those who stir emotions in fans more than others, usually in a critical and negative way. Here’s the leading candidates in my opinion in no particular order. Feel free to leave a comment on who you think best fits the distinction or if you think I left anyone off the list.   Chael Sonnen – Being as I already mentioned him this was an obvious choice and for good reason. It was only 2 years ago that Sonnen was just another name in the sport but that all changed once he was scheduled to face UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. Chael was a one man campaign and did a great job selling both the fight and himself. Unfortunately for Sonnen though he came closer to beating Silva than any of the champions previous opponents in the UFC in the end he lost via submission. Things got worse for Sonnen after the bout as he would be suspended for higher than normal levels of testosterone. In the meantime Chael continued his anti Silva stance and was not shy about voicing his opinion on other fighters [...]

GBU: Adrien Broner Delivers A KO, Kermit Cintron Gets KO’ed, and more

The Good Adrien Broner & Gary Russel Jr: In a weekend devoid of much signifigant action there were two equally spectacular knockouts on HBO Boxing After Dark. Gary Russell absolutely vaporized Heriberto Ruiz with a right hook to the body quickly followed by a right hook square on Ruiz’ jaw which put him out both literally and figuratively. Adrien Broner did his best to one up Russells KO with a devastating third round stoppage over Martin Rodriguez. Broner was headlining in his hometown of Cincinnati and did not disappoint his fans. After a relatively competitive first 2 rounds Broner landed a perfectly placed right uppercut which hurt Rodriguez. Broner went for the kill throwing right and left hooks missing as many as he landed before catching Rodriguez with a winging left that sat him down for the 10 count. Now to be honest neither Russell or Broners opponents were expected to offer much of a challenge but credit to both undefeated prospects for winning in style.

Antonio Margarito, The Unforgiven?

As of this writing Antonio Margarito has been approved by the New York State Athletic Commission to face Miguel Cotto in their highly anticipated rematch after the fight was in the air because of the questionable condition of Margaritos right eye. After some back and forth with doctors it has been deemed that he is not at any undue risk. That said this article is not necessarily about the condition of Margaritos eye although it is a part of the saga that has been Margaritos tumultuous last few years. In full disclosure I must admit that up until the night of his fight with Shane Mosley, Margarito was one of my current favorite boxers in the sport. I was not alone as coming off his win over Miguel Cotto in their classic contest Margaritos career was at an all time high heading into the Mosley bout. Then it all came undone.   In a story oft told Margaritos handwraps were found to be altered with what would later be discovered as plaster of paris, a substance that would harden the interior of Margaritos gloves and make his punches much more damaging throughout the fight. Fortunately for Mosley they were discovered and subsequently removed. Shane would go on to dominate Margarito in the fight, winning by 9th round TKO. Most who watched that fight believe Margarito got what he deserved for trying to cheat and have had disdain for him ever since. The immediate question raised by fans was how many times prior in his career had Margarito possibly used illegal wraps. This was of wonder in particular in his win over Cotto, his fight prior to the Mosley bout. Surely he must have previously fans and some members of the media pointed out or else why would he feel the need for an advantage against a [...]

GBU: UFC 139 Beyond Expectations, MMA Judging Still Horrible.

The Good UFC 139: Sometimes calling something good doesn’t it do it justice, then again how can words possibly capture the level of excitement that was UFC 139? Sure every fight wasn’t a must see but the way in which the pay-per-view portion hit a crescendo is proof that you can’t script this stuff and even if you could people wouldn’t believe it. The event picked up steam with the fight between former WEC champions Urijah Faber and Brian Bowles. What expected to be a close contest ended up being a one sided fight as Fabers speed put him at a tremendous advantage being able to stick and move. The begining of the end came early in the second round when Faber landed a long range uppercut which popped Bowles head up like a pez dispenser. Faber flurried on Bowles with punches and elbows before cinching on a guillotine choke. After rolling to top position with the choke Bowles tapped out giving Urijah a statement win and momentum heading into a third fight with UFC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz.   The co-main event kept the momentum going as the debuting Cung Le and Wanderlei Silva put on an entertaining striking display that saw “The Axe Murderer” Silva score vintage finish. Early on it looked like Le’s first fight in the Octagon would be a successful one as he hurt Silva with a spinning back fist. Wanderlei recovered and would occasionally rush Cung with a barrage of punches. Le threw many of his trademark kicks in the opening round while Silva landed a few solid kicks of his own to close out the first round. The second round saw neither fighter in clear control until Wanderlei hurts Le with a right hand. Sensing his prey hurt Silva went Axe Murderer on Le locking [...]

Friday Boxing News Dump

500lb of cocaine found in Ivan Calderon house, rumors swell that Lindsay Lohan just booked a flight to Puerto Rico wearing I love dwarfs T shirt. (deadspin) Juan Manuel Marquez’s employee accuses him of using steroids to prepare for the third Pacquiao fight.  Pacquiao upon hearing the news flys into a roid rage. (fighthype) What do you think of when you imagine a potential clash of Cotto vs Margarito?  That’s right!  South Haven, Mississippi. (boxingtalk) Khan said Manny should retire, then he remembered that he spars with Manny and says never mind that whole retirement thingy. (boxingscene) When typing ‘cockblocking’ on google, new suggestion shows up stating, “did you mean Bob Arum?” (fighthype)
