Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. vs Andy Lee - With the boxing world stil abuzz about the controversial decision between Timothy Bradley and Manny Pacquiao it seems like everything else is falling under the radar including an intriguing middleweight title bout between champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Andy Lee. This is the kind of matchup that hardcore fans are looking forward to as based on the styles of each it seems like it can’t be anything but a barnburner. It may also very well be the biggest test of each of their careers up to this point with Chavez still being unbeaten and Lee having only one loss to Brian Vera which he would later avenge. Chavez successfully defended his title against Marco Antonio Rubio in easier than expected fashion in his last outing. For his part Lee blasted out veteran Saul Duran in two rounds last time out.. Perhaps the biggest intangible heading into this contest is where it’s taking place, El Paso, Texas under the watch of the dubious Texas Athletic Comission. The Irish transplant will be fighting an uphill battle and most likely need to stop Chavez to get the victory. If it’s in anyway a close fight expect two weeks in a row of heated debate.
916Chris’ pick - Up until recently I was having a time deciding who I thought would win this fight until I was reminded of Andy Lees struggles against Craig McEwan. Don’t get me wrong, McEwan is no bum and Chavez has had difficulties himself against less that high caliber opposition. However I believe Chavez has improved more under the tutelage of Freddie Roach that Lee has Emanuel Steward. Let’s be honest, neither of these two will be compared to Pernell Whitaker in regards to their defense, or lack thereof. With that said I believe Chavez is more durable and being as I envision this being a back and forth contest I give the advantage to Jr. I doubt this fight reaches the final bell but if it does that doesn’t bode well for Lee. As for my pick, Chavez Jr. by TKO around round 10.
Duc’s pick - Chavez Jr seems to have his dad’s chin and Luis Miguel’s face. Good combination I must say. Unfortunately for him, Chavez Jr also seems to have an appetite of Kobayashi which does not bode well for him making the the middle weight limit. So the big question for this fight will be how weight drained will Chavez jr be and how will that affect his performance in the ring. I am going to go out on a long limb and say Chavez makes the weight without much of a fuss and gets rid of the somewhat chinny Andy Lee by the 6th round or so. Maybe on the post fight we will get to see that creepy lip to lip face grabbing kiss from father to son again. Oh the horror.
Tomasz Adamek vs Eddie Chambers – As the Klitschko brothers continue to dominate the heavyweight division some of their former opponents are mixing it up and putting together fights that look to break the monotony of the division. One such matchup is between recent Klitschko casualties Tomasz Adamek and Eddie Chambers. Adamek had put together a string of wins since moving up to heavyweight including a victory over Chris Arreola before failing in his title bid against Vitali Klitschko. The popular Polish fighter has since rebounded with a win over Nagy Aguilera. Although undersized in the eyes of many, Chambers has fared well beating much larger opposition. That was up until he ran into Wladimir Klitschko who stopped him in the 12th round of their contest. Both are on the road back to the top and a win here sends one a big step forward while the other goes tumbling down the ranks. Regardless of who wins I think it’s safe to say neither wants to face a Klitschko in their next championship fight.
916Chris’ pick - On paper this looks like it should be a competitive contest that could also be pretty entertaining. As previously mentioned both have done well in the division outside of one sided losses to the Klitschko brothers, but then again they do that to everybody. Eddie Chambers is clearly the swifter of the two hence the moniker “Fast” and will certainly look to use that advantage while outboxing Adamek. Tomasz may not be as technical a fighter as Chambers but is a tough nut to crack and more often than not gives better than he gets. I really think Chambers can win this one on points but am leaning towards Adamek chasing him down in what I anticipate to be a small ring and doing enough damage to either stop Eddie late or win a narrow decision. Plus it’s hard to pick against Adamek when he’s essentially fighting on home turf in Newark, New Jersey.
Duc’s pick - OH!!! We gotta fight hea in Jersey? Yo Jasmin get my Axe body spray I am going to see a trowdown in Newark. I likes this Thomas Adam fella to lay some smack on that Eddie Chambers okay? I never found his movie funny anyway, that Norbit was a piece of garbage you hear me? Huh? You hear me???? Alright you got my pick for the winner of the trowdown so get out of hea… Hea, hea some spending money for you and yous family, you buy something good fo yo motha you hea me?
